Question from Caleb in Kansas: I'm part of a group that shares "memos from the head office"—messages they believe come from God or a higher power to individuals they don’t personally know. While generally broad, these messages can be strikingly specific and relevant to life decisions.
The group presents these messages in a way that appeals to a wide audience, using terms like "memos" and "higher power" instead of explicitly referencing Jesus or the Triune God, though the organizers are Christian. They also share these messages with unbelievers.
I’m skeptical for two reasons:
My cessationist background makes me cautious.
I struggle to believe God would send messages purported to be from a generic "higher power" to unbelievers. However, biblical prophets did deliver God's messages to unbelievers, so I acknowledge the possibility. (I believe the messages were typically presented as directly from the true God, not positive vibes from a generic "higher power" that the recipient could create in their own image.)
Lacking experience and deep discernment in this area, I’m unsure if this is truly from God or something I should avoid entirely—and perhaps repent of past involvement if it could be demonically inspired. That said, my first encounter with it profoundly changed my view of God—I now see Him as my loving Father rather than a stern judge, which has transformed both my faith and walk with him, as well as my approach to parenting (the Father smiles rather than frowns at His children, so I do likewise). I believe just because it was good/positive doesn't automatically mean it's from above (the evil one can use subtly twisted truth to deceive us).
Answer: In 1 John 4:1-3, John urges believers to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” This involves evaluating the content of the message, the character of the messenger, and whether it aligns with the core doctrines of Christianity. Just because it’s accurate doesn’t mean it’s from God. A key test is whether the message or organization honors Jesus Christ and affirms His deity. Any message that diminishes Jesus or presents an alternative path to God is suspect. While we get that the organization may be trying to be seeker sensitive, it is important that they acknowledge who the higher power is. The way you describe it sounds more New Age than we would be comfortable with. We would recommend that you ask for a statement of beliefs and confirm that their organization aligns with Christian pillars, such as Jesus is God, the Trinity, and that salvation comes by grace through Jesus alone. It is very easy, even for Christian sisters and brothers, to move away from the straight and narrow path in an effort to be more inclusive. Pray and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to guide you into whether this is an evangelistic opportunity for you to speak the truth of who Jesus is or if you should spend your time elsewhere. Blessings!
