Why Apologetics Is Failing—and What Augustine Knew That We Forgot

Modern apologetics is losing its grip on culture - but what if Augustine, writing during Rome’s collapse, already solved our biggest evangelism challenges?

In this episode of Remnant Radio, Joshua Lewis explores why traditional Christian apologetics is failing to connect with our post-Christian culture. Joined by scholars Josh Chatraw and Mark D. Allen, authors of Apologetics at the Cross: An Introduction to Christian Witness, we uncover how Augustine’s methods during Rome’s collapse may provide answers for our current cultural challenges.

Key topics include: • Why rational arguments alone aren’t enough anymore • Augustine’s pastoral approach to cultural engagement • Addressing expressive individualism in evangelism • Converting hearts in a skeptical age • Practical strategies for modern apologetics • Learning from early church wisdom

Whether you’re a pastor seeking to reach your community, an evangelist adapting to cultural shifts, or simply interested in effective Christian witness, this episode provides crucial insights for sharing faith in today’s world. Discover how Augustine’s ancient wisdom might be the key to modern evangelism.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into one or two each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!

Question from Claire in Washington: I am new to the gifts and to the Charismatic Movement and I seem to find a lack of solid, reliable teachers that I could learn from. Besides you guys and Sam Storms, who are other safe teachers I can be listening to?

Answer: Here is a list of books that we recommend for further study. Books

We also would recommend Mike Winger as a YouTube channel to listen to.

___________

Question from Kyle in Pennsylvania: I’d love to hear ya’ll do a dive into the second blessing doctrine and what the Bible actually says about the “baptism in the Holy Spirit”. I’ve heard from multiple different videos of you guys touching on it, but can’t find a video that ya’ll have done on said topic.

Answer: We believe the Holy Spirit is given at the moment of conversion and does not require the evidence of speaking in tongues as proof. Here is an older episode that discusses both sides of the argument.

SHOWS LAST WEEK

If you missed joining the Live Chat, you can still catch the episodes:

Can We Command Demons to Be QUIET? | Demonic Manifestations Explained

Screaming, convulsions, vomiting… Is THAT what biblical deliverance looks like? Do demons get to put on a dramatic show? Or, when a demon manifests, do we have the authority to command it to stop?

Join us as we explain demonic manifestations. We'll explore the biblical accounts of Jesus casting out demons, examining how modern deliverance ministry compares to New Testament examples. From dramatic manifestations to quiet deliverances, we’ll explore what Scripture actually teaches about authority over evil spirits and whether we have the right to command how demons leave.

Whether you’re actively involved in deliverance ministry or simply seeking biblical truth about spiritual warfare, this episode cuts through the confusion, hype, and conflicting teachings. Get ready for a fascinating journey into what Jesus modeled about freedom from demonic oppression - the answer might surprise you.

Tongues, Prosperity, & False Assurance: Allen Parr Sounds the Alarm

When spiritual gifts become spiritual chains: YouTube’s Allen Parr joins us to expose how false teachings are holding believers captive to unbiblical requirements.

In this powerful episode of Remnant Radio, Josh Lewis and Michael Rowntree sit down with Allen Parr, creator of The Beat and author of Misled: 7 Lies That Distort the Gospel. We explore the heart of false gospel messages that have crept into the charismatic and Pentecostal movements—touching on everything from tongues without interpretation, to the health and wealth gospel, to the dangerous claim that speaking in tongues is necessary for salvation.

We discuss how teachings that seem biblical on the surface can lead believers far from the gospel clarity found in Christ alone. If you're wrestling with discernment in the church or questioning teachings on spiritual gifts, seed faith doctrine, or the role of the Holy Spirit, this is a conversation you don’t want to miss.
