QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into one or two each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!

Question from Estelle in Ohio: During the first 3 centuries were women ordained as pastors, priests and bishops?

Answer: Women held real and respected leadership roles, especially in ministries to women and in the house church movement. But being formally ordained as a priest or bishop in the institutionalized sense wasn’t typical for women. In addition, the titles, functions, and the meaning of "ordination" during this time were also not fully developed like they are today.

During the first few centuries, women were:

  • Deaconesses – This was the most widely recognized role. Deaconesses assisted with the baptism of women and ministered to other women, especially in private settings.

  • Prophetesses – Some women were known to prophesy (Acts 21:9; 1 Corinthians 11).

  • Widows enrolled for ministry – 1 Timothy 5 refers to an "order of widows" who devoted themselves to prayer and service.

  • House church leaders – Women like Priscilla, Phoebe, and Junia (Romans 16) were key figures in their local church networks.

Question from Kan in Illinois: Could you review the difference in the gift of knowledge and the gift of prophecy and their use?

Answer: A word of knowledge is a supernatural revelation of specific facts or insights about a person. Receiving a word of knowledge can help build up faith in the person receiving it, and can be especially helpful for increasing a person’s ability to receive any accompanying prophecy for guidance or direction. In contrast, prophecy involves communicating God’s heart and direction through a spoken message, building up the church, revealing His will, providing encouragement or guidance, and calling people to repentance.

In a nutshell, a word of knowledge is like receiving a specific piece of information about a person directly from God’s library, while the gift of prophecy is like being a mouthpiece for God, sharing His heart and His message with others. Both gifts, while distinct, are meant to edify, encourage, and comfort, and they require humility, discernment, and love in their application.
