QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into one or two each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!
Question from Colleen in Canada: I have been listening to your podcast on demonization. Do you consider demons and spirits the same thing? If somebody has a spirit of anger, lust or addiction would you consider those demons? My grandson started doing weed when he was almost 17. He is a Christian and thought God would be okay with it. He's doing much better now; he's 19 now he wants to get off the weed and he told me he has trouble with lust and anger. So I told him it could be a spirit and he could command them to leave. Was I wrong in doing so? He prayed, told them to leave, and I agreed with him. Should I pray with him again and I tell them to leave? Doesn't he have authority over his own body?
Answer: Generally speaking, we would consider demons to be a specific type of spirit – namely, fallen angels who followed Satan in his rebellion against God. Not all spirits are demons, but all demons are spirits. When the Bible refers to “evil spirits” or “unclean spirits,” it’s generally referring to demons. In reference to spirits of anger, lust, or addiction, yes, those would be demons.
Self deliverance can work, but it is not ideal. We would appeal to James 5:6. “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” We would recommend your grandson find a close friend, confidante, or pastor who he trusts to confess all sins. (He may not want to share everything with his grandmother.)
In deliverance ministry, it is important to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us in whether it is a sin issue to deal with through sanctification or the result of demonization. Every person and every situation is unique. Whether freedom comes by deliverance or through sanctification, going forward, we daily put on the armor of God and maintain a close relationship with the Lord through the spiritual disciplines of reading our Bible, attending church, prayer, fasting, etc.

Question from David in Montana: In Luke 11:20 Jesus says we can know the Kingdom is here because he cast out demons by the finger of God. But in Matthew 7:22 he also says that ‘on that day’ some will say they cast demons out in his name and yet he will tell them to depart because he never knew them. Then in Mark 9:40 he says about someone casting out demons, but not known to the disciples, that ‘one who is not against us is for us’. These texts seem to be a little contradictory to me. Can you help me to understand what I’m missing? Also, how can we be sure that we are casting out demons correctly or with the right motives (unlike those described in Matt 7:22)?
Answer: Mark 9:40 speaks to the ability of true believers, beyond the 12 apostles, to perform deliverance ministry. The key issue in Matthew 7:22-23 is not whether these individuals performed miracles (including casting out demons), but whether they had a genuine relationship with Jesus. They may have used His name as a formula or a means to gain power or recognition, but their hearts were not truly submitted to Him. Jesus says, “I never knew you,” indicating a lack of intimate, saving relationship. (Remember, too, that the definition of a false prophet in Deut 13: 1-3 is someone who performs miracles, but leads people away from Jesus.)
Genuine faith, evidenced by a changed life and obedience to God’s Word, is essential. Our motivations must be rooted in love, compassion, and a desire to glorify God, not in seeking personal power or recognition. Therefore, engaging in spiritual warfare requires humility, obedience to God, prayer, fasting, aligning our actions with Scripture, and maintaining a steadfast focus on Jesus. It’s not about mastering a formula, but about partnering with God in His work of liberation and restoration, ensuring that our actions reflect a genuine relationship with Him and advance His Kingdom purposes.

The Case for the Supernatural: Interview with Lee Strobel
What happens when someone dies on the operating table and reports seeing details of their surgery they couldn’t possibly have known? How do we explain medically documented recoveries that physicians can’t understand? What about countless reports of modern encounters with Jesus that transform hardened skeptics?
These are the kinds of supernatural claims that Lee Strobel, former atheist and legal editor of the Chicago Tribune, set out to investigate. The same investigative journalist who wrote “The Case for Christ” has now turned his analytical mind toward the supernatural, examining evidence for miraculous healings, angelic encounters, and near-death experiences.
Join us as Lee Strobel shares what he discovered when he applied his journalistic rigor to the supernatural realm. From a former atheist who demands evidence, this conversation promises to challenge both skeptics and believers alike.
