Is There Biblical Masculinity? Interview with Jon Tyson

We sit down with Jon Tyson to discuss his book Fighting Shadows, which addresses the growing confusion and hostility surrounding masculinity in today's world and offers a powerful call for men to embrace Jesus's vision for their lives.

In our interview with Jon, we'll explore:

  • How many men feel paralyzed and unsure of their place

  • Strategies for men to combat escapism, passivity, and overcompensation

  • Insights into overcoming loneliness, apathy, distraction, lust, and shame

  • How men can see their masculinity as a gift from God rather than a curse, and how to live out their strengths and ambitions in alignment with Jesus's vision.

Jon Tyson will share his experiences from years of men's ministry, providing practical advice and spiritual encouragement for men who are seeking clarity and courage in an age of quiet desperation. Don't miss this enlightening conversation on how to step out of the shadows and into the light of your God-given potential.

Tune in for an inspiring discussion on reclaiming the joy and responsibility of biblical manhood.

What was the Old Testament School of the Prophets?

Modern-day cessationists argue that spiritual gifts can't be trained. And yet, in the Old Testament, we find the company (or school) of the prophets. What was this institution, and what role did it play in ancient Israel? Join us as we explore the historical and biblical context of the School of the Prophets and uncover its significance.

We'll examine key passages from the Old Testament, particularly in the books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles, where these prophetic communities are mentioned. Who were the prophets associated with these schools, and what was their mission? How did they contribute to the spiritual and social life of Israel?

We'll also discuss the teachings and practices that were likely emphasized in the School of the Prophets. What kind of training did the prophets undergo, and what was the nature of their prophetic ministry? We'll consider the relationship between these schools and notable prophets like Samuel, Elijah, and Elisha.

Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of the School of the Prophets and its role in shaping the prophetic tradition in Israel. Discover how these ancient institutions can offer insights into the prophetic ministry today.

Don’t miss this discussion on the origins, purpose, and impact of the School of the Prophets.

ASK YOUR QUESTIONS:

Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into one or two each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!

Caleb from Tennessee: In Ephesians 2:20 could Paul be talking about the Old Testament prophets after all? I know the order of the words may be considered backwards but if Paul is starting from the Apostles could he be working backwards until He gets to Christ Who was the Cornerstone from eternity past?

Answer from Michael Rowntree: Some biblical scholars have interpreted the "prophets" of Ephesians 2:20 to be Old Testament prophets, as you said. I disagree with them. I believe the foundational "apostles and prophets" of Ephesians 2:20 are both "New Testament" apostles and prophets (rather than New Testament apostles and Old Testament prophets) for the following reasons: (1) in Eph. 3:5, Paul differentiates between "other generations"--i.e., from the Old Testament--and the present generation of "apostles and prophets" who have received the revelation of full Gentile inclusion in the church. (2) in Eph. 4:7-11, "apostles and prophets" result from Christ's ascension and subsequent pouring out of gifts upon the church. (3) Eph. 4:11-13 says that "apostles and prophets" (along with the other ascension gifts) will remain with the church "until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ..." In other words, we can expect their continuation until the church reaches full maturity--almost certainly at Christ's return. For these reasons, "apostles and prophets" refer not to an age prior to Christ's first coming, but after.

What is the Law & Gospel Distinction? Crossover with Theocast

We're excited to welcome Jon Moffit and Justin Perdue from Theocast, a ministry dedicated to clarifying the gospel and reclaiming the purpose of the kingdom from a Reformed and pastoral perspective.

In this episode, we’ll look into the critical distinction between Law and Gospel:

The Law of God: As the perfect standard for all mankind, the Law is good, beautiful, and faultless. It exposes the sinfulness of both saints and sinners, compelling them to seek forgiveness and everlasting life outside of themselves.

The Gospel (Good News): The Law of God has been perfectly fulfilled in Jesus. Those who place their faith in Him receive His spotless record. While the Law says “do,” the Gospel says “done.” Our goal is to remind God’s people to rest in Jesus’ finished work.

Join us for a discussion on how understanding the Law and Gospel distinction can transform your faith and bring clarity to your Christian walk.

Examining the Role of Angels in the Church

Can we partner with angels? Should we? Join us as we examine the role of angels in the church. We'll tackle pressing questions and explore the biblical perspective on interacting with these celestial beings.

  • Can we work alongside angels in our spiritual journey? What does the Bible say about this?

  • Is it possible to participate with angels in worship or other spiritual activities?

  • Is it biblical or appropriate to pray to angels? What guidance does Scripture offer?

  • Can believers command angels, and if so, under what circumstances?

  • What are the ethical considerations and boundaries for interacting with angels according to the Bible?

Whether you're curious about the role of angels in your faith or seeking clarity on controversial practices, this discussion aims to shed light on the heavenly hosts and their place in the life of believers.
