ASK YOUR QUESTIONS:

Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into a couple each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!

Question from Dan in Washington: My question is about demonic spirits attached to a place after sin has been committed or a spell has been cast on it. I know of some people who pray against territorial spirits in specific locations to break down the strongholds of the enemy so the kingdom can advance in that place. What are your thoughts on this? Where is this true and where does it go too far? Thanks.

Answer: What you are referring to is known as strategic spiritual warfare, and we would oppose it. It is not a biblical doctrine or practice. Wayne Grudem says this on the topic: “in no instance does anyone in the New Testament (1) summon a ‘territorial spirit’ upon entering an area to preach the gospel . . . or (2) demand information from demons about a local demonic hierarchy, (3) say that we should believe or teach information derived from demons, or (4) teach by word or example that certain “demonic strongholds” over a city have to be broken before the gospel can be proclaimed with effectiveness.” (Grudem, Systematic Theology, 421)

Question from Kait in Seattle: What are the roles of elders and are there different types of elders? In 1 Timothy 5:17 it appears that all elders govern the church but only some elders teach. Is this a correct understanding?

Answer: Check out a short video from Josh on church governance and also a Remnant Radio episode on charismatic church governance.

SHOWS LAST WEEK:

If you missed joining us for the Live Chat, you can still catch the episodes:

The Baptism Battle: Exploring Credo vs Paedobaptism with Dr. Stephen Wellum

Dive into the age-old debate of infant baptism versus believer's baptism with Christian theologian Dr. Stephen Wellum. We'll explore the theological foundations of both credobaptism and paedobaptism, examining Scripture and church history to better understand who should receive this sign of the new covenant.

Dr. Wellum contributed a chapter titled "Baptism and the Relationship between the Covenants" in the book Believer's Baptism: Sign of the New Covenant in Christ (Schreiner & Wright). You can read that chapter here.

Examining the 24/7 Prayer Movement: Scriptural or Stretch?

Join us as we examine the meaning behind Amos 9:11-12 particularly in relation to the restoration of the tabernacle of David and its connection to worship and intercession. What is the booth or tent of David? What does it mean to “possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations” called by the name of Yahweh? Do these verses imply the need for 24/7 prayer and worship to usher in the second coming of the Lord? Or, is that an over-literal interpretation of the text? We'll explore various theological interpretations and discuss how these verses should inform our understanding and application of Scripture.

“In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares the Lord who does this. Amos 9:11-12 (ESV)
