STUDENT TESTIMONIAL: JOHN
🔥 ‘I really didn’t want to do it…’
John was a student in our recent Intro to Spiritual Gifts course. He’d grown burnt out on the gifts and had stopped practicing them until he took the course. Trying to step out more, he reluctantly agreed to pray for a group of rough-around-the-edges guys.
What happened next shocked everyone:
👉 ‘Your hand felt like it was on fire!’ 👉 Every man felt the supernatural heat 👉 That night, a drug-addicted prodigal son finally called home 👉 The boy who was dealing drugs in trailers? He came HOME.
Sometimes the miracle isn’t just in the outcome - it’s in taking that first reluctant step of faith.
From avoiding God’s call to pray to seeing Him move through simple obedience. This is what happens when you push past the ‘I don’t want to’ and step into the ‘What if God shows up?’
🙏 Are you sitting on the sidelines of your spiritual gifts? Consider signing up for Remnant’s Intro to Spiritual Gifts course. Registration opens soon.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into one or two each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!
Question from Christopher in Australia: Why are there so many popular charismatic leaders who walk in such power and see amazing healings and miracles, and even see people converted- yet have such dangerous theology and live in unrepentant sin- people such as Benny Hinn, Todd Bentley, Kenneth Copeland, and Bob Jones, which you guys have talked about on your shows. It feels confusing to see great Christian leaders and men of God walk in such little miraculous power compared to these men. What are your thoughts?
Answer: The presence of supernatural power or manifestations alone doesn’t validate someone’s ministry or theology. Jesus specifically warned about this in Matthew 7:21-23, saying “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you.’” This shows that miraculous demonstrations aren’t necessarily evidence of God’s authentic ministry.
Deuteronomy 13:1-3 directly addresses this issue: “If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet.” This passage clearly shows that false prophets can perform genuine signs and wonders, but their true nature is revealed by whether they lead people toward or away from the true Jesus of Scripture. The key identifier of false prophets isn’t their lack of power, but rather their doctrine and whether they point people to the authentic gospel or to a different Jesus. This is why Scripture emphasizes testing the spirits (1 John 4:1) and examining teaching against the Word of God, rather than being impressed merely by supernatural manifestations.
Throughout church history, we’ve seen the pendulum swing between extreme cessationism and hyper-charismatic excess. The biblical path, however, lies in the “radical middle” - being fully grounded in Scripture while remaining open to all the Holy Spirit wants to do. This balanced approach requires spiritual maturity: maintaining sound doctrine, practicing spiritual disciplines, walking in holiness, and authentically seeking the Holy Spirit’s power for kingdom advancement. While this balanced path may be more challenging, it aligns with the full counsel of Scripture and provides a model for healthy, Spirit-empowered ministry that honors God and truly serves His people. We pray more believers would pursue this biblical balance rather than settling for either powerless orthodoxy or ungrounded sensationalism.
