Is God Real? Interview with Lee Strobel

Every second, hundreds of people around the world type “Is God real?” into search engines. In this episode, we’re exploring this ultimate question with Lee Strobel, former atheist and legal editor of the Chicago Tribune, whose own journey to faith became the bestselling book “The Case for Christ.”

Drawing from his latest work “Is God Real?”, Lee brings his investigative journalism background and legal mind to examine the evidence for God’s existence. We’ll explore how recent scientific discoveries point to a Creator, why suffering doesn’t disprove God’s existence, evidence that sets Christianity apart from other faiths, what makes the “hidden God” reveal Himself, and the practical implications of God’s existence for our lives.

Whether you’re a skeptic seeking answers, a believer wrestling with doubt, or someone wanting to better articulate your faith, this conversation offers fresh insights into humanity’s most profound question. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into one or two each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!

Question from Joe in the US: In Numbers 20:5, do we know with extreme certainty who the word ““those”” is referring to? For example, the children or the parents? How does this verse/passage play out for those who may have hated/rejected God, but later love/receive God and are fully surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus?

Answer: The context of Numbers 20:5 is important - this passage is speaking specifically about God’s covenant relationship with Israel and His response to idolatry within the covenant community. The “visiting iniquity” on subsequent generations refers to the natural consequences of sin within families, particularly regarding idolatry, but it’s not a deterministic curse that overrides individual choice and repentance. This interpretation is supported by several key biblical principles:

-Ezekiel 18:20 clearly states, “The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son.”
-Throughout Scripture, we see examples of people breaking generational patterns through repentance and faith (like Ruth the Moabitess, Rahab, etc.).
-The New Testament emphasizes that in Christ, we become “new creatures” (2 Corinthians 5:17), and our identity is no longer determined by our natural heritage but by our adoption into God’s family.

For those who come to faith in Christ after previously rejecting God, their new identity in Christ supersedes any generational patterns. While they may still deal with consequences of past sins or family patterns, these don’t determine their spiritual destiny or standing with God. The power of the gospel and Christ’s redemptive work is greater than any generational influence. Remember, this passage was given in the context of God’s covenant with Israel and shouldn’t be read as a universal principle that trumps the New Covenant’s promises of complete forgiveness and new life in Christ.

Sometimes we do have to consciously break from generational patterns and apply the blood of Jesus—through active and ongoing faith and repentance—to see breakthrough. This is because generational patterns are so ingrained. For example, Abraham lied about his wife. Isaac followed suit. Then Jacob became a full-fledged deceiver until God broke him of it in the Gen. 32 wrestling match with God. Breaking generational patterns can involve such a wrestling match. Unfortunately, Jacob’s sons surpassed even him in deception—selling their brother into slavery and lying about it. They, too, would be broken. But only after tremendous pain (Gen. 37-50).
