DEMYSTIFYING THE DEMONIC: Understanding Spiritual Warfare with Dr. Clint Arnold

What did first-century believers actually understand about demonic forces? Join us for an illuminating conversation with Clint Arnold, PhD, Dean and Professor of New Testament at Talbot School of Theology, as we delve into the realities of spiritual warfare. In this episode, we’ll explore themes from Dr. Arnold’s book Powers of Darkness: Principalities & Powers in Paul’s Letters, unpacking what the Apostle Paul teaches about demonic forces, supernatural empowerment, and the role of magic in the first century.

Dr. Arnold sheds light on how first-century Greek, Roman, and Jewish beliefs intersect with the biblical worldview, demonstrating that the New Testament portrays principalities and powers as organized, personal beings defeated by Jesus at the cross and ultimately subdued at His return. We'll also discuss the implications for contemporary Christians, including practical guidance for standing firm against spiritual forces of evil.

As both a New Testament scholar and Dean of Talbot School of Theology, Dr. Arnold bridges the gap between academic research and practical application, helping us understand how to engage in spiritual warfare with biblical wisdom and historical insight. Whether you're seeking to better understand the spiritual battle described in Scripture or to engage thoughtfully with the challenges of modern occult practices, this episode is a must-watch for anyone desiring to navigate the unseen with biblical clarity.

Join us for this crucial conversation that brings biblical, scholarly insight to spiritual warfare—live on Monday, January 13 at 4:00 p.m. CST/UTC-6.

What Is The Anointing & How Do We Get It?

In this episode, we explore the rich biblical theology of anointing, tracing its significance from the Old Testament to its contemporary understanding within the Church and its varied interpretations within charismatic circles. This episode unpacks significant biblical texts, such as Jesus’s declaration in Luke 4:18 and the use of anointing oil for healing in James 5:14, while examining the historical and theological development of the concept. Join us as we tackle questions like:

  • What does the Bible mean by “anointing”?

  • How did the early church practice anointing in connection with baptism and deliverance?

  • How does the charismatic movement interpret and sometimes redefine anointing?

We also discuss practical implications, such as the role of anointing in spiritual gifts and the importance of aligning modern practices with scriptural truth. Drawing from church history, biblical scholarship, and personal ministry experience, this episode provides a nuanced look at one of the most essential and often misunderstood aspects of Christian theology.

If you’re interested in understanding how anointing relates to the power of the Holy Spirit, the gifts of healing and prophecy, or the life of Jesus as the Anointed One (Acts 10:38), this episode is for you.

Episode premieres on Wednesday, January 15 at 4:00 p.m. CST / UTC-6.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into one or two each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!

Question from Mark in the UK: I'm a vicar (pastor) and we hold an evangelistic Carol Service each year. We always include a gospel message typically presented in a reasonably interesting and accessible way. Many of my colleagues do the same. Two thirds attending my church's service will not be Christians. However, I and my colleagues see very little impact from our evangelistic preaching. Typically no commitments / few to no people signing up to seeker courses etc. From my asking around clergy forums this seems the predominant experience even among evangelicals.

I'm considering trying something different and integrating two participatory elements into my message this year. Two short times of quiet where I'll publicly pray and ask God to encounter people in that moment.

  1. A time asking God to make his love and presence felt. In the hope God will reveal himself to those in the room in some sort of experiential way there and then.

  2. Another time where I'll do a general prayer for healing in the room. Probably asking those attending to put a hand on any ailment they want to.

I'll include some preceding explanation and testimony. I'm hoping God breaks through the apathy in the room.

What do you think to this idea? Do you think you need a very developed gift to do prayers like this publicly? I've seen a few healed when I've prayed for them one on one but I've never tried something like this "from the stage". I'd value your thoughts!

Answer: Your desire to see real impact by including prayer for encounters with the Holy Spirit and healing is grounded in the Bible. As a vicar, you already have the authority to pray for your congregation—there’s no need for a special anointing. In the Bible, the apostles prayed for people to experience God’s presence (Acts 8:15-17), and Jesus and the apostles often healed people in crowds (Matthew 14:14). Praying for healing in a group setting can be a powerful way to show unbelievers that God is real and active (1 Corinthians 14:24-25). Luke 6:17-19 says people came to Jesus to hear Him and be healed by Him. A public prayer for specific ailments in the church could produce a lot of results.

Take time before the event to practice spiritual disciplines like prayer and fasting. Keep things simple and practical. Set clear expectations, give straightforward instructions for those who may not be familiar with prayer, and consider having a trained prayer team available afterward. You’re on the right track to share testimonies of past healings or moments when people encountered God - these stories can inspire faith. Also, plan to follow up with anyone who has a significant experience.

Remember, the kingdom of God isn’t just about words—it’s about power (1 Corinthians 4:20). Your job is to create space for God to work, and the results are up to Him. The real risk isn’t praying for people—it’s missing the chance to let God show His power and presence.
