Christian Living in Cancel Culture: Interview with Keith Simon
Let’s be real - being a Bible-believing Christian in 2025 can feel pretty lonely, right? This week, we’re tackling that head-on with pastor and author Keith Simon, who’s bringing some much-needed biblical wisdom to the whole “culture wars” conversation. His new book “Joyful Outsiders” is a game-changer for anyone feeling stuck between raging against the machine or just quietly fading into the background. (Spoiler alert: Jesus offers a better way!)
Keith breaks down six biblical models for engaging culture without losing your soul (or your joy!). Whether you’re an artist, protestor, builder, advisor, ambassador, or trainer, God has a specific role for you in this cultural moment. No more walking on eggshells at work or feeling defensive on social media - it’s time to discover what it looks like to be a joyful outsider - just like Jesus was. This conversation is packed with practical wisdom for anyone trying to navigate our post-Christian world while staying grounded in biblical truth. Trust us - you don’t want to miss this one!

STUDENT TESTIMONIAL: ANDREW
I got convicted about a year ago when I read the Bible. I’m like, ‘All these gifts are for today, yes and amen.’ And you know the passage in 1 Corinthians which says to covet to prophesy, and I just kept reading that and saying like, ‘I don’t even know where to begin.’ I mean, I don’t know how to covet something I don’t even know what to do with.
And I just came to believe, you know, I need to be open to this and I need to pursue it. And I didn’t know how. And so anyway, I just kind of felt convicted about that and would basically throw my hands up and go, ‘I don’t know what to do. I have nobody around me who I’ve ever seen do this. If they did, I didn’t know it.’
So that actually is what led me to take this course - was one of the biggest reasons. And man, the small groups especially were so helpful to me. I was able to like step out in faith in that area and see it demonstrated how people kind of approach this idea.
Already the biggest blessing to me has been hearing how much I actually do hear God’s voice. And I just didn’t know it, you know? So much God has been speaking to me so much, and I just thought it was my own thoughts. And so it’s really, really changed that. It’s helped me in the ministry and hearing God’s direction for the messages I preach for deliverance. I’ve been helping people get free of demons, and what a difference it’s made when God just gives you that note. So it’s made a huge difference in my life and ministry, and I’m very grateful."

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Have a theology question? Drop it here. While we can't guarantee we'll tackle every question, we'll dive into one or two each week. So, fire away and let's explore together!
Question from Andrew in Scotland: How would you answer the following question: In John 20:21-22 Jesus breathes on the disciples and they received the Holy Spirit. We know from other Gospels, such as Luke 24:49 that Jesus told them to wait until they are clothed with power, which happens at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit fell on them. So it looks like they received the Spirit, born again, and then received the baptism of the spirit afterwards. I know you guys would say both the receiving and baptism happen at the same time, what then do you make of the verses above, which I think suggest 2 different instances.
Answer: While at first glance John 20:21-22 and Acts 2 may appear to support a two-stage reception of the Spirit, there are several important factors to consider:
First, we must understand the unique historical context of these events. The disciples were living through a transitional period between the old and new covenants. Jesus’ breathing on them in John 20 was likely a prophetic act pointing forward to Pentecost, much like many of His other actions that foreshadowed future realities. The full empowering of the Spirit couldn’t occur until after Jesus was glorified (John 7:39) and ascended to the Father. The disciples’ experience shouldn’t necessarily be seen as normative for all believers, as they lived through this unique transitional period in redemptive history.
Second, for believers today, Scripture indicates that receiving the Spirit and being baptized in the Spirit occur at conversion. Romans 8:9 states that anyone who doesn’t have the Spirit doesn’t belong to Christ, and 1 Corinthians 12:13 teaches that all believers are baptized by one Spirit into one body. While subsequent fillings and empowerments of the Spirit are biblical and desirable, the initial receiving and baptism of the Spirit happen at conversion. The disciples’ unique experience during this transitional period shouldn’t be used to establish a universal pattern requiring all believers to seek a “second blessing.”
